The Result
We benefit from this in terms of reduced human-time needed to complete tasks, a substantial increase in quality through refined and standardized practices, and a marked improvement in the ability to analyze and improve our work; both in-process and historically.
How Do We Accomplish This?
Just as we must not be locked into a specific train-of-thought in how we go about our daily workflow, we do not fully benefit from a one-track technology solution. We must consider many options and design the correct solution with the right technology for the specific problem. The types and properties of the specific tasks determine an initial course of action.
For simplicity's sake, the general types of tasks found within daily workflow are best organized using four categories and four subcategories within each category:
  • Category 1: Recurrence

Rare - i.e. Is performed only once in a while and never part of everyday operations.
Uncommon - i.e. Is performed regularly but not often.
Common - i.e. May be part of everyday business.
Constant - i.e. Will be done over and over again, many times in a row.
